A giant tortoise wandered for a mile across a town when he escaped from his owner.

Titan was found in Kesgrave, near Ipswich, last week and it required three police officers to lift the nine-stone pet into a van so he could be returned home.

Titan's concerned owner Richard Aston was baffled as to how the tortoise managed to get out of his home.

He told BBC News: "There was no sign of the fence being broken, and he can't jump over it - it's three feet high."

Aston joked: "Maybe he teleported there."

He also praised the police officers who were able to retrieve Titan, saying that they were "lovely" and "went out of their way" to return the tortoise.

Aston said that Titan was left unscathed by his ordeal and has started ambling around the garden once again.
