Aoife Ni Niocaill lost the ball in County Waterford the previous week and it ended up floating 124 miles away to Llanrhystud.

The ball was discovered by Aline Denton, who was participating in a beach clean-up in the Welsh village.

Aoife's name had been written on the football and Denton launched a Facebook appeal to reunite it with its owner.

She wrote: "Her football's just washed up on Llanrhystud beach - West Wales! Wonder how long it's taken to get here from Ireland?"

The post caught the attention of Aoife's father who explained how she had lost the ball.

He wrote on the social media site: "It went in the water as the tide was going out and all we could do was watch it drift away."
