Police were called to a home in Aberdeenshire, Scotland after the bird of prey swooped in through an open door and settled in amongst the festive decorations.

Officers were aided by staff from the North East Wildlife and Animal Rescue Centre (New Arc) during the rescue.

Keith Marley, of New Arc, admitted that it was an unusual job.

He said: “When we got there the sparrowhawk was quite happily perched on top of the Christmas tree. It was pitch black outside so it had no intention of leaving a nicely lit room to fly off into the darkness.

"It makes a change from a partridge in a pear tree."
