The crime author - known for his 'Rebus' novels - explained he set up the account to take part in ''an online interview thingy'', but his profile was suspended within five minutes.

He wrote on Twitter: ''Wonder which swine reported me to Facebook as not being me. Only had the account five minutes and already suspended...''

In a further tweet, the author warned that the interview might be a bit difficult to arrange.

He added: ''Only joined Facebook cos somebody interviewing me online needed me to join.

''Whoever that was - our interview might now be problematic, bud.''

Rankin's Twitter followers were quick to try and help solve the mystery of who reported the account to Facebook, with many suggesting that Rebus' enemy, gangster Big Ger Cafferty, was responsible.
