A kind stranger saved Christmas for a family after handing in $3,000 he found on the pavement.

The Wausau Police Department explained a resident walking in Wisconsin discovered a bundle containing $3,000 in cash, a bank receipt and multiple Christmas gift envelopes.

The resident handed the money to police officers, who contacted Peoples State Bank in a bid to track down the owners of the valuables.

Police said: "We were then able to work with the awesome folks at Peoples State Bank to get the money returned to the proper owner and ensure Christmas wasn't ruined after all."

Officers also revealed that the man was rewarded for his honesty.

The force stated: "And for his awesome integrity, we provided the finder with a gift card to a local business to help brighten his day as well."
