A teenage lifeguard rescued a kangaroo in New South Wales.

Lillian Bee Young - a 17-year-old lifeguard who had spent just four days on the job - saved the animal after it got stuck in the rough surf at Iluka beach in Australia and was unable to make it out.

She told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "My other workmate, Carissa and I, we were sitting on the tractor and she goes, 'Oh my God, there's a kangaroo jumping off the rocks!' and we were just figuring out what we should do.”

Lillian saw the kangaroo trying to get away from local fishermen before ending up in the water. After spotting that it was in distress, she hopped in a boat to give the animal some assistance as she completed her first rescue.

She said: "It was quite special. There were people cheering and clapping."
