Man cuts off his own hand

A man chopped off his own hand after being denied an operation.

''I got rid of it because they told me they had problems amputating my arm with a good hand on it. So I took it off myself and now there is no reason why they can't operate.''

Mark Goddard chopped off his left hand with a homemade guillotine in his back garden after being denied surgery following complaints he made to the British National Health Service about a constant pain he'd had in the limb since suffering nerve damage in a motorbike crash in 1998.

The 44-year-old from Devon, in south-west England tossed his hand into a fire in his garden bin to ensure it could not be sewn back on and he's now threatening to chop off even more of his arm unless surgeons agree to amputate it professionally as he claims he's still in agony.

Mark told the Plymouth Herald newspaper: ''There was an alternative and that was having it done properly in hospital. But no-one would do anything to help me - so I did it myself.
