A man died after downing a bottle of Jagermeister in under two minutes
A viral video showed the man downing a bottle of the spirit as part of a binge-drinking competition that took place in South Africa over the weekend. People were seen clapping and cheering him on but he later collapsed.
Police in the Limpopo province have now opened an inquest into the death of the unidentified man, who is believed to be around 25 to 30 years old.
Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo explained that the participants had been trying to win a cash prize by downing the Jagermeister within a specified time limit.
Mojapelo told local media: "One of them immediately collapsed thereafter and was taken to a local clinic, where he was certified dead."
Reacting to the video, one person said: "Worst part of it all... is that, this isn't funny at all... it was a game that turned out all wrong from all directions."
