Matt Ellis, from Cambridgeshire, drank in 51 bars over the course of a day as he became the first person to lay claim to the record.

Ellis began his pub crawl on Sunday (10.10.21) at The Regal in Cambridge and ended at The Weeping Ash in St Neots the following day. He was hoping to raise awareness of the difficulty that pubs have faced during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ellis told BBC News: "It was all about the joy of pubs and the people you meet.

"Pubs over the last 18 months have had a very difficult time.

"I am a big fan of pubs - the contribution they make to our society and the camaraderie you can enjoy in them."

Ellis was required to visit a minimum of 50 pubs during the attempt and had to consume a drink and get verification from staff for it to count.

He largely limited himself to drinking orange juice and diet cola during the challenge, which he says was "probably the most difficult thing I've done in my life".
