App developer Frederik Riedel took to social media to explain how his friend retrieved the phone from the Berlin canal by attaching a magnet to the end of a fishing line.

Riedel explained how his pal tried wading into the water but only proved successful in finding a Nintendo Switch instead.

The pair ended up attaching a magnet to the end of the fishing line and used it to search the canal for the device. Riedel revealed that the phone case's MagSafe ring - a built-in magnet designed to help with wireless charging - helped the fishing line grab the phone and pull it out of the water.

Riedel said that the phone "still works" despite being submerged in the canal.
