Adam Selzer, from Chicago, has uploaded clips on social media using the frozen garments - which he has shaped to stand up on their own - to claim the spot.

He tweeted: "Polar vortex fun: pants with nobody inside them! Soak a pair, put outside. In about 20 minutes you can form them to shape, and in another 20 they're solid."

Reserving parking spaces is common practice in Chicago with locals often using chairs or traffic cones to mark the spots they want to park in and Selzer is now seeking to complete the ensemble.

He told CBS Chicago: "The one thing I tried this time that I haven't before is I also froze a couple of shirts, so we'll see if this works."
