Officials in the US state are asking residents not to dump their unwanted pet fish into lakes after a number of large creatures were removed from the water in the city of Burnsville.

The authorities tweeted pictures of the massive fish removed from Keller Lake and warned of the dangers that they can do.

The city wrote on the social media site: "Please don't release your pet goldfish into ponds and lakes! They grow bigger than you think and contribute to poor water quality by mucking up the bottom sediments and uprooting plants."

Daryl Jacobson, the city's natural resources manager, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune newspaper: "Most of them were definitely bigger than you'd find in your typical aquarium."
