Rutland in the East Midlands had always blocked the fast food chain from opening a branch in the area and had been the only county in the nation without the Golden Arches.

However, a restaurant has now opened in Oakham after proposals were approved back in January.

Some locals are concerned that the McDonald's would lead to an increase in littering but the move has been welcomed by Rutland's mayor David Romney.

He told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "At the end of the day do you want to keep Rutland as it was – it's a very quiet place, nothing happens, it's very well to do.

"Or do you want to say to people we are open for business? We want to create jobs. We don't want the kids to all leave and then you are left with old people."
