The Nike Air Jordan 1 shoes were used by the star during an exhibition game in 1985.

Nine pairs of Jordan's trainers were auctioned off at Christies to celebrate his 14-year-career with the Chicago Bulls.

The auction house described the collection as the ''greatest'' set Michael Jordan footwear ever offered at one time.

Carl Webb, who collects vintage trainers, believes the high value is as a result of nostalgia.

He told the BBC: ''Some people collect stamps, some people collect books, for me it's rare trainers... Knowing you are one of the only people who will have a certain model feels quite nice.''
