A teenager was playing on a court near Arena Park in Cape Girardeau when she stepped on a knife.

Investigators said at least two knives, described as ''flimsy kitchen paring knives'' were eventually found buried underneath the sand.

Julia Jones - the director for the city's parks and recreation department - declared the incident as ''incredibly sick.''

It is unclear whether the knives were intentionally placed underneath the sand.

Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation tweeted: Yesterday evening we were made aware of sharp objects hidden in the sand volleyball courts at Arena Park. The courts were immediately closed to all patrons and the Cape Police Department was notified. The sand volleyball courts will be closed for the next week while Parks staff and the Police Department investigate. Parks staff will be thoroughly checking the courts with metal detectors and rakes...'
