A new study from scientists in the United States has suggested that have an excess amount of leisure time is bad for people's mental health.

The findings revealed that more than five hours a day of leisure time actually causes greater stress and lower wellbeing.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and UCLA assessed data from more than 21,000 people and found that those with a 'moderate' amount of leisure time had significantly better wellbeing than those with too little or too much.

The study's lead author Marissa Sharif said: "In cases when people do find themselves with excessive amounts of discretionary time – such as retirement or having left a job – our results suggest these individuals would benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose."
