A new app claims to be able to translate what a cat is saying.

The creators of MeowTalk claim it can translate a cat's miaows and purrs into English and has identified phrases including 'Feed me', 'Leave me alone' and 'I'm in love'.

The product is designed by Javier Sanchez, who worked as an engineer on the Amazon voice assistant Alexa. He believes the app is particularly useful at the moment as it allows owners to bond with their moggies during the coronavirus lockdown.

He told the Daily Mail newspaper: "I think this is especially important now because... you have people that are confined at home with a significant other – the feline.

"This will enable them to communicate with their cat, or at least understand their cat's intent, and build a very important connection."

The app has earned positive reviews from users and Sanchez's ultimate goal is to develop a smart-collar that instantly translates miaows into human speech.
