Rainer Zietlow and Derek Collins drove for 35,770 miles over 97 days and visited 49 states during their epic journey, which lasted between July and October 2021.

The pair set off in a Volkswagen ID.4 at the manufacturer's US headquarters in Virginia on July 13 before ending at the same building on October 18.

Guinness has now confirmed that the trip has officially set the world record for the longest journey by electric vehicle in a single country.

Zietlow and Collins claim that they visited over 600 Volkswagen dealerships during the trip and had to stop more than 200 times to charge the vehicle's battery.

The former said: "The record not only documents the reliability of the ID.4, but also to the actual readiness status of the charging infrastructure in the US."
