Parents baffled at maths question

Mum, Angie Werner, posted a picture of a tough question on Facebook after her daughter, Ayla, came home from school and showed her the exam-style question.

Angie captioned the question on Breastfeeding Mama Talk: ''Ok, we're all stumped.

''My second-grader's homework - HELP!''

The question reads: ''There are 49 dogs signed up to compete in the dog show.

''There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs signed up to compete. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?''

Although it stumped parents - and readers alike - Angie later provided the answer, which was given to her by the teacher.

The answer was 42.5 and the solution is: 49 - 36 = 13. 13 / 2 = 6.5. 36 + 6.5 = 42.5.

Angie updated the Facebook group and said: ''The district worded it wrong. The answer would be 42.5, though, if done at an age-appropriate grade.''
