A pensioner ended up in Germany after setting his Sat Nav for Rome.

An 81-year-old man attempted to get from Newcastle to Rome while on a mission to see the Pope, however ended up in the small town in North Rhine Westphalia he had mistakenly entered into his Sat Nav called Rom.

Police discovered the man after he had crashed into a sign that said 'Rom' after he didn't didn't put the handbrake of his Jaguar on properly.

Law enforcement say the vehicle came to a halt after hitting the sign but did not appear to be seriously damaged.

Police spokesman Monika Treutler said: ''The man was on a pilgrimage. He was on his way to Rome, where he was hoping to visit the Pope.''
