Residents were left pinching their noses after walking past the ''the most atrocious smell'' over the weekend.
A Reddit user said he'd ''seen open faeces, smeared faeces'' before, but never seen ''anything like it''.
He wrote: ''I commend whoever put it in a bag. It could have been much worse.''
A spokesman for San Francisco's Department of Public Works told The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper that the mess was cleaned up on Saturday evening (30.06.18), and a DNA test was completed to find the origin of the waste.
He added how he was ''glad it was in one place and in a bag''.
