The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office revealed that the cattle had escaped from their owner's property in the US state of Indiana and began charging down the road.

Officers teamed up with citizens and first responders in a bid to return the cows to their owner.

The sheriff's office posted on Twitter: "Definitely a unique afternoon...

"The calves were successfully secured and reunited with each other following today's big adventure.

"On behalf of the owners, thank you to all the great citizens who assisted deputies earlier today."

Officer Derek Allen admitted it was the weirdest experience of his career.

He told the South Bend Tribune newspaper: "I've been involved in many unique situations previously, but not something with this many animals on the roadway."
