The police found a horse in a basement after being called to deal with an intruder.

Authorities say a suburban Minneapolis resident reported a strange man in her basement but officers discovered the animal when they looked inside.

Inver Grove Heights police arrived at the woman's home to find a pale-coloured horse walking through various rooms while officers gawped from outside.

Police Sgt. Adam Wiederhoeft says the investigation is ongoing.

It not clear how the horse got into the house, but it's said that the animal's owner came by take it away.

A message on the police department's Facebook page read: ''No horses or officers were hurt in this incident and the horse was safely returned to the corral!''
