Frustrated devotees of the blood-sucking legend have even verbally abused staff at St Mary's Church in Whitby, North Yorkshire - where Dracula arrives from Transylvania in Bram Stoker's novel - after being told that the vampire is fictional.

Visitors to the church are greeted by a sign saying: "Please do not ask staff where Dracula’s grave is as there isn’t one. Thank you."

A leaflet also warns: "Sorry it’s not here! In fact, it’s not anywhere because Dracula is fiction.

"Even if there are bats in the belfry, no vampire is going to suck your blood."

Father Michael Gobbett has been left saddened by the backlash surrounding Dracula's grave and rejects claims that he is damaging the area's tourism trade.

He said: "Sadly, some have been verbally aggressive towards our staff when told Dracula is a fictional character and is not buried in our churchyard."

Gobbett added: "The primary purpose of a church is the worship of God."
