Researchers from St Andrews University in Scotland have found that grey seals are able to mimic human speech and songs, and the team have trained three of the marine animals to sing the famous theme tune from the legendary space franchise, and the song 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'.

Lead researcher Dr Amanda Stansbury said: ''I was amazed how well the seals copied the model sounds we played to them.

''Copies were not perfect but given that these are not typical seal sounds it is pretty impressive. Our study really demonstrates how flexible seal vocalisations are. Previous studies just provided anecdotal evidence for this.''

Professor Vincent Janik, director of the Scottish Oceans Institute at St Andrews University, added: ''[The study had provided a] better understanding of the evolution of vocal learning'' which is a skill crucial for human language development.''
