The bot - which was created and programmed by experts at Shanghai Jiao Tong University - proved they could have the potential to be in the running to compete at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing after they made it down the hill standing on two legs, gripping ski poles and turn, all without crashing into a human.

The research report claimed: The robot finished tasks including racing, turning, route planning, obstacle avoidance and human-robot interaction through intelligent sensing and braking control.”

They added: “In the tests, the robot showed high flexibility and agility.”

The bot “can be controlled by remote human-computer interaction, which enables it to ski through the crowds and adds the fun of skiing with a robot for the skiers.”

It was designed to cash in on the expected popularity of the Games next month in collaboration with the National Key R&D Program of China's Ministry of Science and Technology.

They said: “After the Winter Olympics, combining technologies such as 5G and wireless fidelity, this robot can be utilized in machine sports games through remote control.”
