Weight-loss drugs can protect against Alzheimer's disease.
So-called skinny jabs such as Wegovy and Ozempic have been found to come with numerous health-boosting side effects and boffins in the US have now discovered that they can ward off the cruel brain illness.
The drugs' active ingredient semaglutide slows down the rate at which the stomach empties and reduces appetite, with the new study suggesting it "significantly lowers" the risk of Alzheimer's in those with type 2 diabetes.
Professor Rong Xu, study leader at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, said: "This new study provides real-world evidence for its impact on Alzheimer's disease, even though preclinical research has suggested that semaglutide may protect against neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation.
"Our results indicate that further research into semaglutide's use will need to be further investigated through randomised clinical trials so alternative drugs can be tested as a potential treatment for this debilitating illness."
