A snake that could eat a human is on the loose in Cambridge.

A reticulated python - which is the world's longest breed of snake at 2.7m (9ft) was spotted on Lovell Road, Cambridge and is being tracked by police - who found the animal's owner but have seen no sign of the reptile since it was reported.

The snake is native to Southeast Asia and is able to open its jaw wide enough to swallow a person - however, shoulders can be difficult.

Cambridgeshire Police tweeted: ''In the early hours of this morning Officers attended the area of Lovell Rd Cambridge, Reports of a three-meter snake seen in the area. Police have located the owner but not the Reticulated Python confirmed to be 9ft long.

''Any sighting please notify Cambs Police on 101. (Sic)''
