Diego and 14 other male Galapagos tortoises have been returned to their native island of Espanola in Ecuador after decades of breeding on Santa Cruz island.

Diego's libido is believed to have saved his species from extinction and he is thought to have fathered 40 per cent of the 2,000 giant tortoises alive today.

The breeding programme began back in the 1960s and has proved to be a success.

Paulo Proano Andrade, Ecuador's environment minister, said that the breeding programme was ''closing an important chapter'' with Diego's retirement.

In a Twitter message, the minister added that Espanola would welcome the creatures ''with open arms'' after ''saving their species from extinction''.
