The suspect had hid from the law in bushes in Harworth, Nottinghamshire - but he blew his cover when police heard a noise ''believed to be the sound of someone breaking wind''.

One of the officers said: ''I was almost out of wind running but luckily (the suspect) still had some.

''I heard him letting rip and followed the noises to a bush.''

The farting fugitive was arrested alongside another suspect found hiding behind a fireplace in a nearby house.

The incident drew many jokes from social media users.

One wrote: ''Were the police using a sniffer dog?''

Another added: ''You must have put the wind up him when you got close.''

A third said: ''Brilliant!... got to be one of the funniest arrests ever!''
