The group were attempting to make their way across seas in the Pacific but had lost their way and run out of fuel.

Australian and US aircraft spotted the sign and were able to land a helicopter on the beach, where they were able to supply the men with food and water.

In a statement, Captain Terry Morrison praised the response of the Australian Defence Force.

He said: ''The ship's company responded to the call and had the ship quickly prepared to support the search and rescue.

''I am proud of the response and professionalism of all on board as we fulfil our obligation to contribute to the safety of life at sea wherever we are in the world.''
