The owner of Rupert - an anxious rescue Dalmatian - came up with a clever idea when their dog needed an operation on his leg but was too scared to go near his vet.

Sonya Schiff suggested that vet Mike Ferrell could wear the mouse onesie that Rupert the Dalmation sleeps on in order to befriend him.

She said: 'When I adopted Rupert from Dogs Trust a couple of years back he had some quite serious guarding issues and aggression, which we believe were pain associated.''

The dog needed surgery after he was eventually diagnosed with hip dysplasia and ligament problems.

Mike, an orthopaedic specialist at the clinic, said: ''Initially Rupert growled when I tried to examine him in my usual clothes.''

Committed to making his patients feel at ease, he dressed up in the furry mouse outfit and was able to examine Rupert safely and then perform surgery on his ligament.
