A Zoom meeting held to discuss building new homes in Yeovil went awry after members of the public inappropriately hijacked it.

South Somerset District Council held the meeting, which was open to citizens, on the Zoom video conferencing app due to coronavirus restrictions - but it featured users named Mike Coxlong and Ben Dover.

To add to the disruption, everyone was put on mute at one point as porn could be heard playing in the background, whilst an individual was also kicked out of the meeting for posing as a councillor.

Despite the chaotic meeting, Councillor Peter Seib was optimistic about future council discussions being held on Zoom.

He said: ''When you see how many hecklers we've had - I'd call them something else, but hecklers for now - it's clear word has got around about this debate.

''If we can get this right and perfect, I think this is the way forward with meetings. It gives the public more opportunity to hear the debate.''
