Noted producer-director of 1950s and 60s Raja Nawathe died in Mumbai, Wednesday morning after a protracted illness. He was 82 and is survived by his wife, noted Marathi actress Chitra. Their only son had died in a road accident a few years ago. A close associate of late showman Raj Kapoor, Nawathe assisted the maestro in his first production 'Aag' and then went on to direct his first film 'Aah' under the RK banner. Nawathe produced and directed about eight films like 'Sohni Mahiwal' (starring Nimmi and Bharat Bhushan), 'Gumnaam' (starring Manoj Kumar) and 'Manchali' (starring Sanjeev Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar), 'Basant Bahar' (starring Bharat Bhushan), and 'Patthar ke Sanam' (starring Manoj Kumar and Waheeda Rehman).
