After I'm Gone

After I'm Gone

After I’m Gone was inspired by a real story, although it's important to note, there was no real-life murder, just a father/husband/boyfriend who went on the lam and was never heard from again.

You have been awarded many prizes in crime fiction- so how does it feel to have that continued recognition for your work?

The recognition is helpful insofar as it allows me to keep writing. Awards are very pleasant things and I think anyone who wins one should be able to bask for up to 24 hours. But then you have to go back to writing.

Please tell us about the character of Felix Brewer.

He's someone leading a compartmentalized life long before that term was in vogue. Devoted husband, father, a member in good standing of his synagogue. But also an adulterer and the head of a criminal enterprise, one that eschews violence, but still harms people.

One of your reviews said that you transcend the limits of genre so do you agree with this?

It's not my favourite phrase as it demeans the genre. I maintain the genre can do anything, even if I cannot. But I understand that it's meant to be a compliment and I accept it in that spirit.

You have been compared to the likes of Michael Connelly, Denis Lehane and George Pelecanos, so how does that make you feel and are you fans of their work?

I am definitely fans of their work and flattered to be compared to them.

You have been praised for writing great and serious fun- is that something that you want to achieve when you set out to write each of your novels?

I set out to write a better book each time, one that I hope will play fair within the rules of the genre as I understand them -- the crime is the engine of the plot, the mystery is somehow "solved" or explained -- but with the underpinnings of some bigger, larger themes.

What is next for you?

I've finished my next book, although it doesn't have a title. I'm trying to figure out what I'll write next. Any suggestions?

After I'm Gone by Laura Lippman is out now, £12.99 (Faber & Faber)
