PR School Your Time To Shine

PR School Your Time To Shine

This masterclass in publicity is aimed at small business owners, freelancers and entrepreneurs who want to use the media to grow and reach the right people on and ongoing basis.

Today, Natalie is putting seven key PR elements in the spotlight so you can shine in the new decade that is ahead of us.

PR isn’t free advertising There are many misconceptions about PR and one of them is that PR is free advertising. I am afraid that this simply isn’t the case. PR is an investment of your time, resources, energy, products and creativity, all of which are precious and need to be used wisely.

Know what media your target audience consume If you want your PR efforts to work you need to be seen in the right places. If you design stunning dresses for women, you want your products to grace the pages of Grazia, Elle and Stylist. If you’re an HR consultant, think more HRZone and Personal Today and your tribe will find you.

PR can do many things Driving people to your website, increasing sales, taking your book to number one on Amazon, securing funding, changing perceptions, raising money and positioning yourself as an expert in your field are all possible with PR – so decide what you are aiming for, and go for it.

Be prepared Have product descriptions, a list of your services and an up to date biography prepared so that when you reply to requests, or are asked for comments and quotes, you’re ready to go!

Photos are a must have A good photo can make the difference between a yes or a no from the picture desk at YOU magazine, so have them ready and you’ll be more likely to make the grade. Go for clean, clear product images and creative headshots, and if you can, work with a pro to get something really special.

Be in it for the long-haul I always tell my clients that PR is a marathon not a sprint, and if you want PR to really work, you have to be in it for the duration. One piece on Bustle is nice, but ongoing appearances in various media outlets will make you recognisable, and that’s what you are looking for. You won’t always get a yes, but don’t give up. Take it one step, and one opportunity at a time, and then when it starts to happen and the results come in, you’ll be so glad you didn’t give up.

Start today Just like going to the gym, giving up smoking and eating a plant-based diet, PR is something that can be put off, but if you want to see the results, you need to start today. There is no question about it, putting yourself out there can be hard, we don’t want to look like we are showing off, but if you don’t do it someone else will and it’ll be their face smiling back at you from the pages of Fabulous and not yours!

Good luck.
