The Paying Guests

The Paying Guests

From the international bestselling author, Paying Guests is the first novel that Sarah Waters has written in five years, following her previous historical novel, The Little Stranger.

It is set in 1922 and follows the story of Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter who live in a grand house together. Their world is upset when they have to take in paying guests- Lillian and Leonard Barber- a young couple who are of a lesser class than the Wrays.

The novel follows the two families as they become accustomed to living together and the relationships that are forged along the way.

In this video she talks of the joys of researching the period and her process of doing so, as well as the surprising relationship that her characters develop through writing the book.

The Paying Guests is out on the 28th August 2014.
