British politicians will discuss whether to change privacy laws to protect Kate Middleton, the girlfriend of Britain's Prince William, from media harassment tomorrow (06.03.07).The 25-year-old regularly battles crowds of photographers outside her London home, following speculation that she will soon become engaged to the prince.Conservative Member of Parliament John Whittingdale told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "The scenes outside her home were deeply disturbing and we want to ensure that they are not repeated."The Commons Culture Select Committee will hold tomorrow's public hearing, during which Sir Christopher Meyer - chairman of the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) - will be asked whether the media's self-regulation rules are effective in protecting Kate from harassment.Kate now has direct contact with London's Scotland Yard police, but officers have only been called to her home to protect her from the paparazzi scrum once. Kate has since been compared to William's mother, Princess Diana, who died after a fatal car crash in a Paris tunnel in August 1997, whilst being pursued by the paparazzi.Sir Christopher is a strong defender of the media's ability to keep itself in order, but many of the photographers who follow Kate work for foreign publications and are therefore not governed by the PPC rules.
