Madonna will play a transsexual in a new Hollywood movie - and was so desperate for the part she agreed to do it for free. The singer is said to be thrilled with the role of cross-dresser Candy Darling as it fulfils a life-long ambition to play the eccentric '60s actor. Candy starred in a string of Andy Warhol films and was the inspiration behind Lou Reed's classic songs Candy Says and Walk On The Wild Side. A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Madonna has been desperate to make a film where she can earn respect for her acting abilities. She is still trying to shake off the bad publicity from the movie 'Swept Away'. She sees this as her big chance. "She has wanted to play this part for so long because she feels so strongly about the character.

"She said she would do anything for the part and has agreed to work for free."

Madonna secured the part after jetting to New York last month to meet with longtime friend and movie agent Bryan Lourd, to discuss her film career.

Soon after, the Material Girl met with producers of the as-yet unnamed film and agreed to star.
