The 'Jeopardy!' host passed away peacefully aged 80 on Sunday (08.11.20) following a battle with pancreatic cancer, and his wife of 30 years - with whom he had daughter Emily, 27, and 30-year-old son Matthew - has taken to Instagram to thank everyone for their "compassionate messages and generosity".

Jean shared a picture from the couple's wedding day in 1990 of Alex placing a wedding ring on her finger, and captioned the post: "My family and I sincerely thank you all for your compassionate messages and generosity. Your expressions have truly touched our hearts. Thank you so very, very much.

Many Blessings to all,

Jean Trebek."

The likes of Ryan Reynolds, John Legend, Viola Davis and Ellen DeGeneres all took to social media to pay their respects over the weekend after the sad news of Alex's death.

John wrote: “I was obsessed with Jeopardy as a nerdy kid growing up in Ohio. I’ve loved and revered Alex Trebek since I can remember. What an iconic career. RIP Alex Trebek.”

Whilst Viola called Alex “a true, true gentleman and courageous hero”, and Ellen posted: “Alex Trebek hosted Jeopardy for 36 years. What an incredible career and remarkable life. I’m sending love to his family and fans.”

Alex’s passing was confirmed by the official ‘Jeopardy!’ Twitter account.

They wrote: “‘Jeopardy!' is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends.”

Alex first revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2019, and had been open about his battle several times, including admitting this year he would stop his cancer treatments if his last course failed to work.

Meanwhile, the late TV legend's final episode of 'Jeopardy!' is set to air on Christmas Day (25.12.20).

A message on the show's Twitter reads: "Today's show features a special message on behalf of everyone in the Jeopardy! family.

"Alex taped shows through December 25th, 2020. They will air as he intended, in his honor. (sic)"
