The 'Sherlock' actor - who has previously admitted he doesn't understand why he is a heartthrob - was one of a number of celebrities who read out mean tweets about themselves on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' and laughed off a mocking message about his looks.

The tweet stated: "If you find Benedict Cumberbatch attractive, I'm guessing you'd also quite enjoy staring directly at a cat's anus."

But the actor responded by bursting into delighted laughter and saying: "Yeah, well someone did, and she put a ring on it," before flashing his gold wedding band.

Benedict, 39, married theatre director Sophie Hunter, 37, earlier this year and the couple welcomed a son, Christopher, in June.

The actor recently insisted his sex symbol status is a "reflection and appreciation" of his work and said no one ever found him attractive until he starred as the titular detective in 'Sherlock'.

He said: "I was never seen as sexy by anyone until 'Sherlock' came along and so I understand [being seen as a sex symbol] more as a reflection and appreciation of the work, rather than my own natural magnetism.

"I certainly remember when I was an adolescent and despairing why girls weren't interested in me.

"I've always maintained that Sherlock is sexy and people are merely projecting his cold, brilliant, charming, flawed self onto me."
