The 51-year-old actress has been cast in the drama series as Dr. Vivian Capshaw, the resident MD at Claremont Psychiatrics, who delighted in assigning menial cleaning duties to Michael Sheen's character Dr. Martin Whitley when the serial killer is assigned to infirmary duty - only to realise he could prove more valuable than she expected when he becomes more adept at treating patients.

Fox Entertainment are thrilled to have the "extraordinary" actress on board.

Their president, Michael Thorn, said in a statement: "An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen.

"I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in a season that is bound to raise the bar set by an outstanding season one."

'Prodigal Son' follows Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne), a former FBI profiler who works for the FBI and has a unique insight into the thinking of serial killers because of his father, Martin, and his murderous past, but worries that could one day cause him to succumb to the same sociopathic urges as his dad.

In December, Catherine was left nursing an injured foot after suffering an accident while putting up Christmas decorations in her and husband Michael Douglas' home.

Posting a video on Instagram of her foot wrapped in an ice bag, she said: “So I was putting up my Christmas decorations, and an iron rod that’s supposed to be a sculpture - which I don’t even like - fell on my foot, and it hurts.”

Catherine then went on to share another Instagram post in which she revealed she would be unable to carry out household chores now that she’s injured.

She posted a meme which read: “My thoughts: Today after work, I am going to spend an hour at the gym, do the laundry, clean the living room…

“My brain: Lies! All lies!”

And she captioned the post: “Especially now with my holiday decoration injury! Thank you all for your wishes (sic)”

The ‘Terminal’ star also posted a video of her finished Christmas decorations, as she said she now feels “so festive”, despite her foot still being in pain.

She said in the video: “Thank you for all your well wishes. I hurt my foot doing this. Was it worth it? Merry Christmas everybody.”
