Stephen Reed - who walked out on his wife Maria and Charlotte when she was just two years old - was admitted to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with the illness shortly before Christmas and he's thought to have passed away at home surrounded by family.

He had previously spoken of his desire to reunite with Charlotte, 34, and he even turned up outside her house one time in the hope of meeting her.

In 2008, he also pleaded with Charlotte - who has Ruby, 13, and Dexter, 12, as well as another baby girl born in August - to allow him to meet his grandchildren.

In an open letter, he wrote: "Please get in contact with me - I still love you.

"It upsets me very much that I've got a grandchild who I don't know and another on the way, but what can I do?

"When I see photos of Ruby, I see a lot of myself in her. I'm a good dad. I think I would be a good grandparent. I don't see what the problem is."

However, the reconciliation never happened, with Charlotte making it clear she never intended to reunite with her estranged dad.

She explained: "They are strangers to me. I don't know if they are moral. Ignorance is bliss. I'm staying in my own ignorant bubble, right or wrong."

Charlotte was adopted by her stepdad James when she was just three years old.

James was diagnosed with a rare terminal blood disorder, AL amyloidosis, in 2019, and at the time, Charlotte admitted he was her "best friend".

She said: "I rely on him for so much, he's my buddy, my absolute best friend and has been for years."
