The 'Could It Be Forever' singer was given the court-ordered sentence along with a fine of $900 after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge in September of driving while intoxicated while on his way to Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York.

In court on Tuesday (12.05.15), the judge also sentenced the former 'The Partridge Family' star to a six-month license suspension, the installation of an ignition interlock device to stop him from attempting to start his car while drunk, and a waiver of his right to appeal the decision.

The news comes less than a year after it was revealed the 65-year-old musician - who has children, actress Katie, 28, and musician Beau, 24 - had entered alcohol rehabilitation.

In February the star also filed for bankruptcy, which he described as "necessary" following his split from third wife, Sue Shifrin.

Papers filed in Florida at the time showed he had assets worth £6.5 million but almost an equal amount of debt including £85,000 in legal and medical fees, and £25,000 on credit cards.

In a statement he said: "I am going through bankruptcy proceedings.

"This is necessary for practical reasons to reorganise my life as I go through divorce and to restructure my finances."
