Kelly Rowland and her bandmates Michelle Williams and Beyoncé reunited for the latter's set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last month and Kelly has revealed that the reunion had been in the pipeline for a long while.

She said: "Beyoncé asked us early on - I can't remember how early, but it was early. Months before. It wasn't really hard to keep the secret, though, because I wanted it to be a surprise for the fans. I feel like to have shown us so much support and so much love over the years, they deserved it. They deserved that moment; it was all about them."

And Kelly is hopeful that the group's return will be a "beacon of light" for women and help to empower them as individuals.

She told the New York Post's Page Six column: "I wanted us to be a beacon of light for women in that moment. That you can do anything, be anything, dream anything. There are no boundaries when it comes to women. We are not just mothers, not just wives - we are whatever and whoever we want to be."

Meanwhile, Michelle previously said that Destiny's Child's reunion at Coachella was "a blessing".

She shared: "Let's call it a blessing. Beyoncé and Kelly - they've been in the game for, what, 23 years? Me just 18 years. And when people see us together they still lose their minds! People are asking, 'When y'all gonna tour? When y'all gonna put out new music?' It's been 14 years since we've had an album together, and people are still asking."
