The popular David Frankel-directed film - which starred Anne Hathaway as an aspiring journalist working as the assistant to a high-fashion magazine editor, played by Meryl Streep - will be adapted into a musical by Kevin McCollum, the producer behind the 'Rent' stage show.

The Tony Award-winning producer - whose Broadway credits also include 'Something Rotten!' and 'Hand to God'' - entered into a deal with Twentieth Century Fox in 2013 to turn their blockbuster films into musicals.

Kevin has been particularly eager to transform the well-loved movie - which also starred Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci - into a similarly successful musical, Time magazine reports.

The cast of the musical has still to be confirmed, but members of the original cast have previously suggested they'd be happy to return for a movie sequel and have also been linked to the much-discussed stage production.

Asked about reprising her on-screen character Andy for a movie sequel, Anne - who recently appeared in a one-woman stage show in New York - previously said: "I'd love to do that but I don't know if there is any plan for it."
