The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' star had praised Anna - with whom he shares four-year-old son Jack - for being so understanding because of her own success.

He said in December 2016: "It doesn't hurt that I'm with somebody who's been, for longer than me, super recognizable and famous and working nonstop.

"It's a lot to ask somebody to understand, or expect somebody to understand, why you have to be away for so long. But she's, like, 'Dude, I get it, of course you have to go.'"

Back in 2015, Chris had insisted things would get better in the future, in terms of going away all the time, and recently Anna and Jack have been joining Chris on the occasional press tour.

He shared: "These are the work years. The gravy years are to come. The way we work it out is we just take at least one moment every day to be present with one another. Whether or not we're in the same room, or the same state, or even the same country, we check in, you know?"

Chris and Anna announced their split in a statement on Sunday night (06.08.17).

He said: "Anna and I are sad to announce we are legally separating. We tried hard for a long time, and we're really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward. We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another."
