Dr Sean Conley and the President of the United States' doctors conducted a press briefing, where they revealed that the President did see his oxygen levels drop twice after contracting the virus.

Conley said: "He has continued to improve. Over the course of his illness, the President has experienced two episodes of transient drops in his oxygen saturation. We debated the reasons for this, and whether we’d even intervene. It was a determination of the team based on the timeline from the initial diagnosis that we initiate [steroid] dexamethasone."

Dr Brian Garabaldi, another member of the team, added: "He has been up and around. Our plan today is to have him eat and drink, be up out of bed. If he continues to look and feel as well as he does today our hope is to plan for a discharge as early as tomorrow to the White House where he can continue his treatment course.”

Meanwhile, the 74-year-old president previously revealed the next few days will be a "real test" for him in his coronavirus battle.

Speaking from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, where he is being treated, he said: "I came here, wasn't feeling so well, I'm much better now. Over the next period of a few days I guess that's the real test. We'll be seeing what happens over those next couple of days. I'll be back. I think I'll be back soon. I look forward to finishing up the campaign the way it was started. We're going to beat this coronavirus or whatever you want to call it. And we're going to beat it soundly."
