The former 'Mad Men' actress - who played Peggy Olsen in the 60s advertising drama - admits she has been the subject of "sexism" in Hollywood and is "sure" she's a victim of the gender pay gap.

She said: "Have I experienced sexism like Peggy did in the 1960s? Of course not.

"But have there been times when I haven't made as much as a man? I'm sure. And it's a factual thing, not a matter of opinion. That's sexist."

The 33-year-old actress is currently working on a potential TV adaptation of a book, which she plans to produce herself, and has been shocked that studios have passed on the project because it has a female protagonist.

She told Red magazine: "I don't want to jinx it or talk about it in case it doesn't happen.

"It's not modern, I can say that and it's a story I am shocked has never been done before.

"When pitching it, more than one place said it was 'too female'. And I remember saying to my producing partner and our director, 'Is that legal?'

"It's inane and archaic and I can't believe people are still getting away with saying that."
