The 36-year-old rap star has revealed he's been sober for more than a year after spending time in hospital in 2019 for exhaustion and substance abuse.

Reflecting on his downward spiral, he shared: "I was running for like a good 20 years without a break, and God put a stop to that. I had a little health scare.

"I tell people all the time, 'If you don't end up in the ICU after your birthday, then it wasn't a good birthday.'"

Montana admits to "chasing the wrong things" prior to spending more than a week in hospital.

The rapper turned to Adderall to stay up late and Percocet to relieve back pain, but his drug use eventually started to overwhelm him.

He told XXL magazine: "Then it ends up being a hobby, then it ends up being an addiction. They reel you in."

Montana came to look at being sober as his "new high".

Speaking about his recovery, he said: "It was just overdoing something for too long.

"And, to the point where, now sober is becoming my new high. People were saying I was out of control. Not me, you know what I'm saying?"

Montana - who previously dated reality star Khloe Kardashian - now considers overcoming his addiction to be one of his biggest achievements in life.

He explained: "[I] stepped back, took two steps back, didn't drop no music, detox from social media ... And I think that was like the hardest thing I ever did in my life, to snatch myself back. So, for me to stop everything and just step back, that was like one of my biggest accomplishments."
